Another article on Bush and the conservatives from my favorite liberal commentator, Mark Shields. He’s calling the Pres. a “big government conservative,” which is about what he is. His policies are a big change from Reagan’s which wanted to abolish the Education Dept. He may have some troubles before this next election.

As a follow up on George Bush's problems with his own party, I just read the article in the Economist on this apparent rift. The grassroots organizations are upset and they are the ones who get the votes out for Republican candidates. The article uses the old Tip O'Neill quote of in politics "dance with the one that brung you" to remind him that the liberals he is trying to impress won't remember him in the next election. I don't think he's winning over too many independents with the stands he's making, but he may be able to pull out another electoral win because of all of the special favors he has dished out to the "red states."

New Web-Log
Check out Kris Lofgren's new site. Has a lot of good stuff. He has an interesting article posted on the problems in Columbia that most of the main stream press ignores.

Clinton II
The New Republic's daily post from the 9th is on presidential hopeful John Edwards. They are trying to bring the freshman senator down from his pedestal as the man who can beat Bush. I agree with them. I don't like Edwards and I don't think he can win. He's just too phony. He going to act like Clinton in front of the Democratic base, could very easily get the nomination, and be slaughtered by Bush because people are tired of the same old "I feel your pain attitude." Go Lieberman!

Un-Democratic Left?
Today the far right leader of the Dutch nationalist party, Pim Fortuyn, was shot dead two weeks before the election. It shows that many on the left are even more undemocratic and fascist than those on the right. I was completely against Fortuyn’s platform, but he had the right to run for office and give the voters a choice, yet the people on the left have proved again, as they have many times in America and other countries, that it’s their way or no way.

That’s Enough!
I am sick of our diplomats kissing ass and trying to make peace with North Korea! It is by far the most oppressive and despicable regime on the planet and I was glad Bush included them in the “Axis of Evil” and was disgusted when he took them out. Here’s a good link from BBC showing what life in the country is like (notice the picture of Albright)

Today they pulled out of talks with the South, because they said the foreign minister used language that was too harsh and did not apologize.
I’m not saying we invade the country, I remember what happened the last time, but we do need to pick up pressure on them and put them back into the Axis. Here’s a good article from the weekly standard from March that gives some good suggestions.

I don’t see how we can stand by our principles without doing something about this slaughter.

The Criticisms from the right just keep coming for Bush. Today in the NY Post, Jim Hoagland discusses how the bureaucrats at the State Dept. are changing their financing to the opposition Iraqi National Congress. This is being used to reduce America’s options to attack and work within Iraq to overthrow Saddam.
In the Weekly Standard, Jonathan Last gives a critical account of Bush’s foreign policy and does a similar critique of the fight with DeLay that Novak gives.

Good stuff and I think they may be right. Especially Hoagland.

GOP Rift?
Interesting column today in the Chicago Sun-Times by Bob Novak. He openly talks of a feud between President Bush and Majority Whip (soon to be Majority Leader) Tom DeLay.
http://www.suntimes.com/output/novak/cst-edt-novak06.html
I was surprised that Novak would want this out in the open causing scandals in his party and I couldnft really tell whom he agreed with. He says that Bush is in many ways more conservative than Reagan and he discusses the fact that Bush hasnft vetoed any bills yet, a conservative policy to give the legislature more power. But he says that signing the farm bill is against conservative principles and is against all of the pork going to the rural Republican districts.
Although Ifm completely against farm subsidies for the moment, I think that politically Bush is right. He can probably get enough support from this to knock off a couple of Democrats from the rural areas (maybe Cleland, Carnahan, and Wellstone?) and, even if that wonft work, he will at least maintain the rural seats he has. It really depends on who voters think got them the money. DeLayfs feeling that it will hurt the gbaseh is completely wrong. Wefll just have to see if the gHammerh is upset enough to break with the Pres.
