128th Kentucky Derby

Today was an unusually boring Kentucky Derby with bad horses and luke-warm odds. I think I have to agree with Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, when he said the Derby was “decadent and depraved.” The people in attendance were, as usual, the world’s elite. The former owner of today’s winner “War Emblem” is an Arabian prince who decided he wanted to be included in Western high society.

Other owners included George Steinbrennor (sp) and Lawrence Ellison. I assume most of the people in attendance were fairly pleased with the President’s tax cut for the wealthiest 1% and with an estimated $30 million (prize and separate betting) for the winner, we know where that money went.

I’m not going to cut down the Derby itself. It is the original Superbowl and is deserved of its fame for excellence. I just think that it reveals that America does have a flourishing aristocracy that no one pays attention to, unless they are all together on camera. I wish horse racing the best, but good riddance to Derby culture.

Today I want to wish Willie Nelson a happy 69th birthday. Those leather lungs can probably still take down three or four doobies a day. His website, willienelson.com says his health is fine and he played two shows today to celebrate. He just released his second autobiography two months ago and it's okay. Don't expect anything great, but he has the lyrics to all of his songs listed and he tells some funny stories. "The Facts of Life and Other Dirty Jokes" is the title, by the way. He has like twenty-five grandchildren from his five marriages and there are pictures of most of them in the back (I wonder if he remembers their names?) After Waylon died, people have been paying more attention to Willie and Johnny Cash and they should. Here's to another 69 Willie!
